Down Dog, Reflections on Barks in a World of Bytes

Ace in Action Ace does not like me. This is a fact. Ace is a dog and every time he sees me, a barking frenzy ensues. He is not afraid of me. His tail is wagging, but his demeanor is more, let me get off the leash and see watch what happens. Ace has spoken barked.  Someone mentioned to me, what if people were more like dogs? There is an honesty about dogs. Dogs don’t lie to you, dogs hang their heads in shame when they have done something wrong. You know when they like you and

    Mirrors, Plants and Dimmer Switches

One of the cool things about good mirrors, they reflect what’s there. There is no opinion, nothing that tries to make you feel good or bad, they just reflect. The mirror does not say, oh those pants make you look fat, that shirt is to tight or that color is wrong for you. The mirror does not say that style is outdated, or that outfit is odd. Those are judgements. That good mirror shows you your physical appearance. What shows you how we appear in the world? I went to a lectur

So What? The Pitfall of the Assumptive Care

Teacher/Me: Your audience has to care about your topic. Look at them, ask them do they want to hear you speak about why the Cavaliers beat the Warriors. Student: But I’ve got facts and points in the game I can describe that show the Cavaliers are a superior team. Teacher/Me: Look at the 15 people in this room, they don’t care. They’d be on their phones if they weren’t banned from using them during class. Look, the best point I can make to all of you about speaking, presentati

You have the right to remain silent; use it.

I got nothing for my blog post this week. I drafted three different topics and nothing is fully thought out. With that, I realized, there are times to remain silent. We’ve all experienced at work or in everyday life when someone is talking and you realize, they have no idea what they are talking about.  Worse still, you realize, the someone talking knows they have no idea what they’re talking about and yet, they keep going rather than say, excuse, I need a moment to think thi

The Four Way Stop, Road Rage and Goldfish

Why are people confused at a 4 way stop? You yield to any vehicle that reaches the intersection before you do. How are people learning to drive? YouTube? If there is a pedestrian crossing, forget it. The stop becomes a game of four car roulette.  Some drivers seem to think, the first car to move is the first car to go while others sit clueless. Insert road rage here.  UGGGHHHH. The law is automobiles leave the stop sign in the same order in which they arrived at the stop.  Ho

    Oops. Did I do that?

I hate being wrong and if I’m wrong, I want you to know the reason, like I didn’t do anything maliciously and I’m not stupid. Mistakes happen.  I flew from San Francisco to Daytona Beach and paid an additional $89 for premium seating extra legroom, bulkhead.  The last time I flew this airline, I was in first class on a 16 hour flight to Egypt. Upon boarding there was a pillow, a blanket and water bottle. Hmmm, I thought, they are making this premium seating a lot like first c

Saying the Same Thing? Words versus Intent.

A few weeks ago, I had this discussion with a friend. I said “…and stop saying we’re both saying the same thing.” The response was, “I’m just trying to show common ground.” I shot back, “No when you say that, it’s you trying to prove your point putting my statement into your frame of reference. It feels like you are ignoring what I’m saying.” The response back to me was, “ahhhh, I had no idea.” Then something occurred at breakfast that illustrated my point. My glass of juice

What Not to Do; A Look at Business Advice

The trained eye can spot the fake Rolex or Louis Vuitton knockoff. The same is true in business; the phony insincere suck up is easy to spot, so knock it off. What can you do not be labeled as the fake, the phony, the poser? This part is like cleaning out your closet of fashion mishaps – this is clearing your head of business misconceptions. Fake it until you make it? Oh come on, what does that mean anyway? Act like you can do something until you can do it? Really? Sure, act

Longevity? Don’t be the Gone Girl

There are books and discussion all about how to succeed in the workplace.  Flexibility and doing extraordinary things can be amazing for a career. This is a  different approach. Before you can become the most awesome employee ever, you need to make sure you don’t unexpectedly find yourself  in the precarious situation of being dismissed, let go, fired. You don’t want to be the Gone Girl. Lifeguards at Work Have you or your friends had that hot mess moment? You know, someone w

    Branding? Consistency & Value

Don’t destroy your brand as you try to build it. It sounds like common sense, which it is, but it is not common usage. At work (or anywhere else for that matter), I wanted people to like me, so I always volunteered for extra tasks, to work more than anyone else. While others would have 5 tasks for a project, I would take on 10. Go me, team Sheila. I was very productive. I’d get 7 or 8 things done compared to everyone else, but I’m sad to say I did this for a number of years b
